New norm requires us to wear mask the moment we stepped outdoor. Worst still, depending on occupations, some are even required to wear for long hours throughout the day without air-condition. While covering up our mouth and noses may help minimise spread of COVID-19, some of us are also uncovering a new problem - Maskne, also understood as mask-related acne. How did this happen? When we breathe or talk, our mask tends to trap in lots of hot air. This air creates a warm, humid environment and an ideal setting for yeast bacteria and other flora, such as demodex (A type of skin mites that naturally live on our skin) to grow. These bacterial imbalance and friction from the mask thus promote acne and as well as something called periodal dermatitis. How to tell ? This is when you noticed fine pimples and pustules appear around the nose and mouth area. As what we observe, this pandemic has either made us either very diligent or very negligent about self-care. There are people who washed face more diligently than before as wearing mask tend to make us perspire more resulting discomforts.
